Announcement of Completion of Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence-Kyushu (JMCoE-Q)

Kyushu University EU Centre has developed a strategic three-year project “Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence-Kyushu” from September 2016 to August 2019, including on a wide range of activities of education, research, outreach, and academic exchange. It ended its 3-year operation on 31August 2019.
Your support and cooperation during these past three years were greatly appreciated. We wish all those involved many more successful years in the new endeavors that lie ahead.

August 2019

Aim of JMCoE

A Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence is a focal point of competence and knowledge on European Union subjects. A Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence gathers the expertise and competences of high-level experts and aims at developing synergies between the various disciplines and resources in European studies, as well as at creating joint transnational activities and structural links with academic institutions in other countries. It also ensures openness to civil society. Jean Monnet Centres of Excellence have a major role in reaching out to students from faculties not normally dealing with European Union issues as well as to policy makers, civil servants, organised civil society and the general public at large.

In Japan, Kobe University was adopted as JMCoE in 2015. More than a hundred of Jean Monnet Centres of Excellence had been established in the world, and it is being developed as a global brand.

Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence-Kyushu (JMCoE-Q)

Kyushu University has strengthened its expertise on EU matters during the activities as the consortium leader of the EU Institute in Japan, Kyushu (EUIJ-Kyushu) funded by the European Commission. The University has promoted EU-related education and research. In recognition of our earlier achievements of EUIJ-Kyushu, Kyushu University was selected as a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence (the project name is “Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence-Kyushu”) secondary in Japan. It will develop a strategic three-year plan from September 2016 to August 2019, including on a wide range of activities of education, research, outreach, and academic exchange. It will provide guidance and a vision for the best experts for creating synergies on specific EU subjects, and strengthen the global development.

Fukuoka’s exceptionally good links with neighbouring regions, and its position as the premier Japanese destination for Chinese overseas students, makes the JMCoE-Q ideally placed to act as an East Asian ‘hub’ for the promotion of EU-related research, teaching and public outreach.
