Aim of JMCoE (Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence)

Aim of JMCoE (Jean Monnet Centres of Excellence)

A Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence (JMCoE) is a focal point of competence and knowledge on European Union subjects. A JMCoE gathers the expertise and competences of high-level experts and aims at developing synergies between the various disciplines and resources in European studies, as well as at creating joint transnational activities and structural links with academic institutions in other countries. It also ensures openness to civil society. JMCoEs have a major role in reaching out to students from faculties not normally dealing with European Union issues as well as to policy makers, civil servants, organised civil society and the general public at large.
While more than a hundred of JMCoEs had been established in the world, and it is being developed as a global brand, Kyushu University is the only JMCoE in Japan currently.

Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence-Kyushu (JMCoE-Q)

Kyushu University EU Centre first strengthened its expertise on EU matters while acting as the consortium leader of the EU Institute in Japan, Kyushu (EUIJ-Kyushu, 2011-2016), which was funded by the European Commission, and actively promoted EU-related education and research during this time. In recognition of the achievements of EUIJ-Kyushu, Kyushu University was then selected as a JMCoE in 2016 (the project name was “Jean Monnet Centre
of Excellence-Kyushu [JMCoE-Q]” (2016-2019)), and followed in 2020 as the “Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence-Kyushu, Second Stage [JMCoE-Q2]” (2020-2024, *Including 1-year extension of activity period), and developed a strategic plans. Now we are pleased to announce that a new project, the “Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence-Kyushu, Third Stage [JMCoE-Q3]”, starting on 1 December 2024 and continuing to November 2027 will allow us to again carry out a wide range of activities in education, research, outreach, and academic exchange, and to contribute to the globalization efforts of Kyushu University through the further deepening and development of EU research and education.
